OTHER PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS
EMANUEL SPORT ASSOCIATION This sports ministry is the only one of its kind in Romania. Started by a pastors son, Emanuel has organized the only specifically Christian soccer team in Romania. Last year, they won only half their games, but played on national TV two times. Each time on TV, players were interviewed and allowed to speak for Christ. They also won the Leagues sportsmanship trophy. Team members and managers are committed to honoring Christ in their play and using every opportunity to speak for Christ in a public way. Most of the teams against whom the Emanuel team competes are what we used to call semi-prothat is, the players are on the payroll of some company that also pays for uniforms, equipment and playing fields. Emanuel has none of these advantages. Team members buy their own uniforms, balls, etc. and they pay the rent for the practice field as well as for the playing field when they are the home team.
CHRISTIAN CENTER FOR MUTUAL HELP The Christian Center for Mutual Help is located in Cluj-Napoca, one of the largest cities in Romania. It was started in 1990 with help from several outside organizations, who flocked to Romania immediately after the overthrow of the communists. The staff and volunteers, however, are all Romanian. More than twenty of the volunteers are physicians, nurses and pharmacists, who give their time and expertise to deliver medical care to the needy. In addition to the clinic, the organization also distributes food, clothing, and household goods, as well as providing counseling to those who need it. One of the unusual ways they help people is that they have been given 20 wedding dresses that can be used without charge by brides who cannot afford to buy one. The Center, like many of the other groups we are helping, distributes good used clothing, and we would be happy to send them any clothing so designated. One of the major needs, however, is the need for medicines and other medical supplies. Physicians often have sample medicines that are too close to expiration to be used here in this country. Also, many other medical supplies are discarded because a pack of some kind has been opened and not all of the utensils used. These would be very useful in Romania. Ask your physician or hospital if you can collect these items for use in Romania.
Only ten days after the communist government fell in 1990, Holt International had workers in Romania taking care of children. The organization, now staffed by Romanians, handles adoptions of abandoned children; provides shelters for unwed mothers and infants; provides foster care for HIV positive children; and has recently begun training government personnel in adoption procedures. In the past, we have given Holt Bibles; baby clothes and formula and a computer to help with training of mothers in the shelter. Holt has two ongoing ministries that we want to help.
REACH OUT ROMANIA Started by a retired American pastor, Reach Out Romania began an evangelistic outreach, and has expanded into meeting material and social needs as well. Most recently, they have opened the House of Hope, a home for girls. These girls were formerly in government-run orphanages, but have since been released with no place to go. They are in their early teens and too young to get married and not trained for employment. House of Hope gives them a place to live and prepare for life as Christian adults.

PROJECT RUTH Started by Providence Baptist Church in Bucharest, Project Ruth has become an outstanding ministry to Gypsy children and their families. Reaching out first to children living in the churchs neighborhood, workers discovered that most of the Gypsies are illiterate. As a result, an elementary school was started, which has since been accredited. As workers have become more involved in the life of the Gypsy community, the project has expanded beyond the school to provide social services to the whole population in the area. Recently, Ruth Project has opened additional centers in Transylvania, the northwest region of the country. Here is a list of requests from the school itself. Quantities are parentheses. No prices are included because most of these things can be sent from the States. Many of them would make excellent Sunday school or Bible School projects.
